Baskin as an example of social innovation

As part of the project Geniusloci. Archive of Italian Generativity, the Sturzo Institute organised the conference Managing Social Innovation. The German case and the Italian case. The conference is part of the project 'Genius Loci - Archive of Italian Generativity', a scientific collection of stories of 'economy that works' and that can give Italy a new start: stories of people who have created enterprises and realised businesses allowing their communities to grow, and of experiences that have developed in different fields, profit, non-profit and public administration. It is an archive that aims to be not only a testimony, but also a model and working method.

The Italian reality presented was that of baskin.

Baskin received the international award

Baskin received the international award “Design for all Foundation”

The Design for all Foundation, on the occasion of its annual competition aimed at rewarding international excellence in the field of Design for all and open to three categories of candidates - non-profit organisations, companies and public administrations -, initially received around 30 projects from all over the world. Through a jury of 10 experts from 7 different countries (in Europe, America and Asia), the Foundation selected 19 projects and then elected the 3 finalists in each of the 3 candidate categories. At the end of the last evaluation phase, BASKIN's project emerged as the winner in its category (non-profit organisation), receiving the Foundation's 2011 AWARDS award on 24 February 2011, as a high cultural recognition. The concept of DESIGN FOR ALL, or also called elsewhere INCLUSIVE DESIGN, or UNIVERSAL CONCEPTION, is a concept developed in various fields (industry, architecture, ergonomics, ...) to offer all people, with all types of abilities, the possibility of access to the same opportunities, using the same products and services. Design for all is about reshaping the SHAPE of objects, structures and infrastructures, but also of services; inventing new products and new services that can guarantee a common ACCESSIBILITY and USEFULNESS for all.

In this competition, the Baskin Association proposed to explain the extent to which the Baskin initiative (as a model of 'inclusive sport'' or 'sport designed for all') operationally realised the conceptually innovative transfer of the Design for All principle to the field of sport. The project presented suggested another possible horizon in the international sports landscape, leaving open the possibility of the development in the coming years of an 'inclusive sport' as a social innovation for the benefit of the entire community.
